Ballet Conrad

I found your YouTube channel a few months ago and I have been slowly making my way through viewing all of the podcasts. I have also purchased the DVD and have watched it entirely. At this point, I feel like the best thing I can do for myself is to try to implement your principles of placement into my class work at the studio, and at home. I am grateful to you for sharing your knowledge and experience!  So much of what you say in the podcasts resonates, exactly, with my experience and observation as a ballet student, mother of dancers, and balletomane. Thank you and keep up the great work!

I bought the dvd (and a basic blue ray player for $ 70) and I highly recommend it for anyone who is rethinking or questioning their ballet technique and teaching they are receiving. Eric takes you from the basis and rebuilds your placement with instructions that are clear, precise and actionable...and no, I was not paid to say that!!

I was all, "Who does this guy think he is?" when I clicked on the video - but I watched all of it and heard the points you had to make, and I was willing to learn more. As soon as I got the DVD and started working on it myself, it became clear that my "hopeless" turnout (direct quote from more than one teacher) could be near enough flat with a bit of work!

As a student, but more importantly as a teacher, I see it as my duty to keep learning and improving. I wish even one of my teachers had felt the same, or it wouldn't have taken me until now to figure out that my turnout has been poor all this time not because of my natural facility or a lack of effort, as most of my teachers had me believing, but because my extremely hypermobile ribs and upper back meant I wasn't quite standing correctly in order to use my muscles the way I was supposed to! And imagine if I hadn't kept my mind open enough to give you a chance to explain your point - I'd never have seen Svetlana's progress or learned she was barely older than me, and I wouldn't have realised there was hope for me too!

One place I worked we would say "It's okay to be wrong" all the time. Sure, sometimes it was used to mock someone's personal opinion about a movie or such, but for the most part it was about setting aside your ego and being open to learn. It's a point I'm going to be sure to make REPEATEDLY when I do an update video featuring my own progress.

-sickling feet, not enough weight on back leg (or maybe front leg?), looking down, not pulling up, flobby stomach, loose knee, twisting upper body, sitting in my hips, weight shifting, wobbly upper body, tilted hips in balance, knee not turned out.
The list can go on and on. Those are the issues I was trying to eliminate during the classes for years. I don't know why, I clicked on that black & white, visually very non-appealing youtube video, and experienced probably the biggest "aha-moment" since I started ballet as an adult. Bottom line - I can't describe how grateful I am for the knowledge you shared on your podcast. It's been about 6 months since I started watching it and implementing the advice, but the difference is hard to describe - elements that used to be out of my reach became embarrassingly simple, and I had to spend actually quite a bit of time just to remember the points from the list above - because they simply vanished from my reality. The best part is I am no longer getting frustrated when the turns don't work, because now I know the reason, I know how week the muscles still are, I feel the moment I lost it, and I'm happy to face the fact my body is still too weak for that. Before it was just a pure frustration, not understanding why there's no consistency, leaving those elements to luck or prayers, rather than conscious muscle work.

I have watched the DVD and in the middle of watching it again! It's fantastic. Absorbing the information you have given has been life changing on so many levels. The DVD is so clear, the breakdown of the points of placement and principles are really great. While watching those sections, and with the information I have already learned from you, it felt very obvious (in a good way) and logical. I feel that I have a clear understanding now of your method and feel confident bringing it into my work. Thank you so much for creating the DVD and for sharing all your knowledge. I also found it really helpful when you explained how some of the process looks and feels while developing turnout and placement. You have said this on some of your recent podcasts with your son, how nobody sees the in-between development, and agree this leads to a lot of misunderstandings and insecurity. Noting these in between phases was definitely reassuring! Been using this material from the DVD on the students I teach and it is making a huge difference! We have slowed everything down and are facing the barre mostly in first. The kids (ages 8-18...probably 50 students total across all the classes) are all really into it and asking some really smart questions. They are really appreciating the points of placement and principals and seems like it is very easy for them to understand. I think they appreciate the "simplicity" (not quit the right word) of it and having a "check list" and way to trouble shoot what they are doing. They are working really hard and exited about it. For all those teachers who are afraid to start teaching something different, I don't think the students see it that way. It is more of, you got to this level, now let's fine tune it and really analyze what you are doing. We are all having a great experience so far!

Ok I / we managed to watch the entire video! Although, some things of placement we were aware -through your great podcast ; the details of the principles; application and maintenance during exercises were phenomenal! Our humble appreciation to both you for knowledge, patience, willingness to share but most importantly to Svetlana for placing herself in such a vulnerable state right from the beginning to the point she has achieved thus far. I can not get over how difficult this is for a child let alone for an adult having to pay attention, recalibrate constantly and expect the body to convey what mindfully is / was grasped.

I've watched the dvd, and I really love it. It's like engineer or mathematician analyzed the ballet (i'm mathematician/engineer). I'm in Svetlana's age, have trained ballet 7-12 years old, later as adult for almost 8 years. And I always felt, as balet was a black box for me : you don't know what to put inside and don't know what would you get back. It was frustrating

I would like to thank you so much for your hard work on the DVD! I purchased it and have already watched it multiple times and started to use it. I am 14.  I am looking forward to the podcast and I am grateful to receive your help!

The principal and all the teachers are coming from Russian ballet system. The importance of turn out and placement are always stressed in class. But after watching your DVD, some knowledge I have learned from the teaching of my school have become more connected and clearer and more conscious in my execution of techniques we repeat everyday in class. Thank you so much for the honest sharing of your knowledge to us meaning ballet students.

I watched your DVD and podcasts, and I agree and respect what you're doing. It's frustrating, how come no one in 8 years of ballet has never really mentioned turn out or said what you've said.  I've been trying to do a slow barre and follow your advice alone ,and I was feeling better technically and physically

I have been following your podcast now for about 5 months. What brought me to find you on youtube has been, as many others, is left hip pain, and trying to figure out what I am doing wrong in ballet that could have contributed to this. I have admired your dedication to ballet, the precision of your teaching, and ultimately your wife and son’s progress which speaks for the work you do.

Thank you so much for making this. I have watched two hours in the first sitting and am reaping he benefits already with the in and up instruction.  I am so grateful for this placement information as it is answering all of the questions I had asked my own teacher. I just thought I was the wrong shape. I didn't seem to be able to straighten my legs and do tendu in the centre without my body getting in the way. Now I know I have hyper extended legs and a laudosis in my back.(if that is the right word) and I know what to do because of you! I can't wait to share this knowledge.
